Ave, maris stella
SATB divisi, soprano and tenor solos | Duration c. 6'00”
Hewitt Hill Music
Ave, maris stella was commissioned by the Chapel Choir of King's College, Aberdeen for their tour to Budapest, Hungary in 2015. The work has been performed by the group a number of times in Hungary and the United Kingdom, and was recorded as the final track on their album O Sacrum Convivium: A Feast of Sacred Music. The work is dedicated to my brother Lucas, his wife Emily, and my nephew Locke, who was born just as I was finishing the piece as a gift to him.
Ave, maris stella,
Dei mater alma,
atque semper virgo,
felix cœli porta.
Sumens illud ‘Ave’
Gabrielis ore,
funda nos in pace,
mutans Evæ nomen.
Solve vincla reis,
profer lumen cæcis,
mala nostra pelle,
bona cuncta posce.
Monstra te esse matrem,
sumat per te precem
qui pro nobis natus
tulit esse tuus.
Virgo singularis,
inter omnes mitis,
nos culpis solutos
mites fac et castos.
Vitam præsta puram,
iter para tutum,
ut videntes Jesum
semper collætemur.
Sit laus Deo Patri,
summo Christo decus,
Spiritui Sancto
tribus honor unus. Amen.
